Description

Founded in 2001 to address the urgent need for safe shelter in the Orangeburg area, The Samaritan House is a vital resource for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness. After a four-year closure, the shelter reopened in September 2020 under new leadership, including Executive Director Henry Miller, with a renewed commitment to offering safe, dignified housing and comprehensive support services.
Currently, The Samaritan House serves up to 40 residents and is actively pursuing expansion plans to increase its capacity to 55 beds, ensuring more individuals and families have access to emergency shelter. The organization collaborates closely with local government officials, service providers, and community stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions for homelessness in Orangeburg and the surrounding Tri-County area.
Through strategic planning, community coalitions, and ongoing fundraising efforts—including support from Senator Brad Hutto and local authorities—The Samaritan House is preparing to renovate and expand its facilities, including kitchen and dining areas, to better serve residents.
The shelter’s mission is clear: to provide shelter and resources that help individuals experiencing homelessness transition to stable, permanent housing. With a vision that everyone has a safe place to live,” The Samaritan House exemplifies compassionate service and community collaboration, working tirelessly to meet the growing need for affordable housing options in Orangeburg County.
If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness in Orangeburg, The Samaritan House stands ready to provide help, hope, and a pathway to a safer future.
