Beyond Homeless, Inc., based in Putnam County, Indiana, is a community-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness through comprehensive support, education, and empowerment. Founded in 2012 after thoughtful community dialogue on the growing issue of homelessness, the Beyond Homeless Shelter officially opened its doors in 2014 to provide safe, supportive shelter for individuals and families in crisis.

More than just a shelter, Beyond Homeless recognizes that homelessness is deeply linked with poverty, deteriorating mental and physical health, social isolation, and trauma exposure. Research shows that those who have experienced homelessness face significantly higher mortality rates and are more likely to suffer from suicidal behavior (Roos, Mota, et al., 2013). That’s why Beyond Homeless takes a holistic, long-term approach—addressing both the immediate needs of unhoused individuals and the systemic barriers they face in rebuilding stable lives.

At Beyond Homeless, we believe that stabilizing lives must come before self-sufficiency. We equip our clients with practical life skills, job readiness training, and emotional support to prepare them for a life beyond the shelter walls. Our programs are designed not only to provide temporary refuge but also to help clients transition successfully into permanent housing, meaningful employment, and lasting independence.

Beyond Homeless also plays a vital role in community education and advocacy, raising awareness about the true causes and consequences of homelessness. We highlight how this is not just a social crisis, but an economic development issue that affects every part of the community—especially children and vulnerable populations.
