Fairhaven Rescue Mission
Description
Fairhaven Rescue Mission – A Legacy of Compassion and Community Outreach in Northern Kentucky
Fairhaven Rescue Mission, located in the heart of Northern Kentucky, is a Christ-centered, community-based ministry with a rich history of serving the homeless, hurting, and spiritually broken. What began as a small outreach effort in the early 1970s has grown into a vital inter-denominational rescue mission, providing essential services to destitute individuals and families in the region.
The mission’s roots go back to the early 1970s, when Bob Ledford, an employee of Union, Light, Heat and Power Co. and a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church, was moved by the heartbreaking conditions of many inner-city children. Seeing physical neglect, emotional trauma, and spiritual emptiness among these youth, Bob and a small group of Christians began ministering directly to the children and their families. They used church vans to bring them to worship, forming Bible clubs to teach and care for them beyond Sunday mornings.
Recognizing the need for a dedicated space, the group established the Banklick Street Mission in 1974 with the support of Calvary Baptist Church. The mission quickly grew, offering worship services for adults, clothing, groceries, holiday support, and spiritual counseling to struggling families.
In 1977, under the leadership of Rev. Randall Faulkner, the mission moved to a new location and became known as the Pike Street Mission, expanding its reach to even more impoverished and homeless individuals in the community.
A pivotal moment came in 1981, when Rev. Paul D. Kaiser became the mission’s first full-time director. With vision and dedication, Rev. Kaiser spent three years evaluating how the mission could evolve to meet the growing need for overnight shelter and long-term transformation for homeless men. Through conversations with local churches, social service agencies, and community organizations, it became clear: Northern Kentucky urgently needed a homeless men. Through conversations with local churches, social service agencies, and community organizations, it became clehomeless men. Through conversations withfull-service rescue mission.
That vision was realized in 1984, when the Pike Street Mission transformed into the Fairhaven Rescue Mission—a fully operational, faith-based rescue mission providing not only meals and shelter, but also spiritual support, counseling, and restorative programs for those in crisis. The mission was formally incorporated with support from local professionals and business leaders, ensuring its sustainability and continued growth.
Today, Fairhaven Rescue Mission stands as a beacon of hope in Northern Kentucky, guided by its founding values of compassion, faith, and service. The mission serves homeless men, low-income families, and individuals battling addiction or brokenness, offering practical assistance and spiritual renewal through the love of Christ.
From its humble beginnings with a borrowed van and a few willing hearts, Fairhaven Rescue Mission has become a lifeline for the vulnerable—meeting physical needs while pointing people toward lasting transformation through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
