Happy Helpers For The Homeless
Description
Happy Helpers for the Homeless was founded in 1993 by Amber Coffman, who, at just eight years old, felt called to dedicate her life to serving the poorest of the poor after volunteering at a homeless shelter. Inspired by Mother Teresa, Amber dreamed of creating an organization that would bring love, food, and hope directly to those living on the streets—and she turned that dream into reality.
Since then, Happy Helpers has prepared and distributed over one million lunches from its Maryland headquarters. Alongside meals, volunteers provide essential items such as toiletries, clothing, blankets, toys, and resource books. The organization never judges—its mission is simple: to love and serve people in need. For many, Happy Helpers’ weekly visits mean not just nourishment, but dignity, compassion, and encouragement.
In addition to weekly street outreach, Happy Helpers hosts annual events, including birthday celebrations for the unhoused, family outings for children, and special service days offering haircuts, dental care, job search assistance, and more. The group also extends its outreach to Guatemalan families on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and provides weekly food baskets to homeless teens throughout the year.
With the support of schools, churches, businesses, and volunteers from across the country, Happy Helpers has grown into a national movement, inspiring branches in other states and reaching people from around the world. Amber continues to share the mission through speaking engagements, encouraging others to join in breaking the cycle of homelessness and spreading love and kindness.
At its core, Happy Helpers for the Homeless believes that every act of compassion matters. A warm meal, a bar of soap, a smile, or a kind word can change lives and restore hope.
