Description

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded by Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, a young French university student at the Sorbonne, who was deeply moved by the devastating poverty he witnessed in Paris during the 19th century. Inspired by the charitable works and unwavering compassion of St. Vincent de Paul, Ozanam set out on a mission to help those in need on a personal, one-on-one basis, guided by the belief that true charity goes beyond justice to restore dignity, hope, and love to the most vulnerable. His vision was to “accomplish through charity what justice alone cannot do,” creating a faith-driven movement dedicated to serving the poor and marginalized.

Under the mentorship of Sister Rosalie Rendu, a devoted member of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Ozanam and his fellow student peers began their outreach work in the slums of Paris, providing hands-on assistance and compassion to those suffering from poverty and despair. The Society chose St. Vincent de Paul as its patron, drawing inspiration from his life of service and tireless commitment to the poor.

What began as a small group of university students has grown into a worldwide charitable organization, active in over 150 countries, carrying forward the founding values of charity, humility, service, and love for humanity. Today, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul continues its mission through person-to-person service, offering food, shelter, clothing, and emotional support to individuals and families in crisis. Rooted in its Catholic tradition yet open to all who share its mission, the Society remains a global beacon of compassion and solidarity, transforming lives and communities one act of kindness at a time.
