People with a life-threatening illness who cannot independently access healthy food may qualify for Project Angel Food’s free medically tailored meals. The program serves Los Angeles and the rest of Los Angeles County, California, through medical enrollment rather than open pantry pickup.
Start with the client application or ask Client Services for help. Applicants complete an enrollment form, and a health care professional supplies the medical information. English and Spanish forms are available, with assistance in other languages. Allow up to one month for review of a complete application because demand is high. Eligible applicants then have an intake interview to arrange their diet plan and delivery.
A registered dietitian assigns a menu after reviewing medical and nutrition needs; clients can also request individual nutrition counseling. The kitchen is not allergen-free and cannot accommodate most food allergies or gluten-free, kosher, halal or vegan diets. Discuss these restrictions before relying on meal service.
Clients need a working phone and a way to receive and safely store food. Deliveries follow assigned routes, not on-demand requests. Enrolled clients may arrange kitchen pickup at least one day ahead; unscheduled public pickup is not available. For assistance beyond meal service, see NHREA’s federal assistance resources.
