South County Homeless Project
Description
Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (BOSS) is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to helping homeless, poor, and disabled individuals achieve health, stability, and long-term self-sufficiency, while addressing the root causes of poverty, homelessness, systemic inequities, and mass incarceration. Since its founding in 1971, BOSS has been committed to empowering the most vulnerable members of Alameda County by providing access to safe housing, supportive services, and opportunities for economic independence.
Originally created to assist individuals with severe and persistent mental illness who had been displaced due to public hospital closures, BOSS has grown into a comprehensive social justice organization serving unhoused people, low-income families, and entire neighborhoods affected by poverty and structural barriers. Over five decades, BOSS has expanded its mission to include reentry services for formerly incarcerated individuals, violence prevention initiatives, workforce development, behavioral health support, and community-led advocacy to combat racial inequities and build safer, stronger communities.
Recognized as a pioneer in innovative service delivery methodologies, BOSS addresses both the immediate needs and long-term solutions to homelessness, housing instability, and community violence. Through partnerships, advocacy, and direct services, we work tirelessly to break cycles of poverty, create equitable opportunities, and ensure that every person has access to the resources and support needed to thrive. With over 50 years of impact, BOSS continues to lead the way in transforming lives and advancing social justice throughout Alameda County and beyond.
