Choosing Our Roots

Choosing Our Roots is an Alaska nonprofit social service organization focused on helping LGBTQ+ Alaskan youth and young adults access safe homes, supportive communities, and opportunities to thrive. Founded by queer Alaskans and youth for queer youth, the organization centers participant voice in its policies, services, and decisions.

Its work includes housing, case management, and life-skills training. Choosing Our Roots takes time to understand each participant’s beliefs, values, habits, and lifestyle when helping identify a host home that fits their needs. The organization describes its approach as youth-centered, youth-led, culturally relevant, and trauma-informed, with an emphasis on dignity, respect, empowerment, community, and hope. People seeking housing-related help can review NHREA’s homeless assistance resources in Alaska. Federal assistance resources may also help with broader support options. Visit the official Choosing Our Roots website to confirm current program details and inquiry instructions.
