Description

Located at 930 N. Henry Street in Alexandria, Carpenter’s Shelter supports people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Founded in 1988 after a church-based winter shelter effort begun by Father Tony Casey in 1982, the organization has grown into a nonprofit focused on shelter, housing placement, guidance, education, and advocacy.

Its services include residential emergency shelter, education and job training, case management, and assistance moving from homelessness toward stable, independent housing. Carpenter’s Shelter also provides permanent supportive housing for individuals who have experienced long-term homelessness alongside disabilities or complex health or mental health needs. Through its Rapid Re-Housing program, eligible participants may receive housing-search assistance, financial support for deposits and rent, and continued case management in the community.

To learn more about the organization and its programs, visit the official Carpenter’s Shelter website. People seeking broader guidance can also review NHREA’s Virginia homeless assistance resources and federal assistance resources.
