Description

Founded in 1968 in the wake of Newark’s civil unrest, New Community Corporation (NCC) has grown into one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive community development organizations. Guided by the vision of Monsignor William J. Linder and community leaders, NCC’s mission is to help inner-city residents improve their quality of life, affirm their God-given dignity, and achieve personal success.
With a wide range of programs, NCC addresses critical needs in housing, education, healthcare, workforce development, and family support. Harmony House, a 102-family transitional housing facility, provides safe shelter and on-site services for hundreds of homeless families each year, while NCC owns and manages over 2,000 affordable housing units for seniors and families in Newark, Orange, and Jersey City. Resident Services Coordinators provide vital assistance, from arranging activities for seniors to connecting families with needed resources.
NCC also supports economic empowerment through the New Community Federal Credit Union, offering affordable, community-centered financial services, particularly for low-income wage earners, immigrants, and individuals with disabilities. The Supportive Assistance to Individuals and Families (SAIF) program provides intensive case management to help people transition from public assistance into meaningful employment.
Healthcare is another cornerstone of NCC’s services. The organization operates a 180-bed Extended Care Facility, specializing in skilled nursing, sub-acute care, and Alzheimer’s and dementia treatment. In addition, the Family Service Bureau of Newark (FSB), an NCC affiliate since 1882, provides outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment with a holistic, integrated approach.
Education is central to NCC’s mission. The New Community Career & Technical Institute (NCCTI) trains students for high-demand careers in fields such as automotive technology, healthcare, culinary arts, and business. The Adult Learning Center serves more than 2,000 students annually with ESOL, adult basic education, and high school equivalency preparation, opening pathways to college and career opportunities. NCC also operates two early learning centers and robust youth services programs, including after-school initiatives, summer camps, and leadership training.
With more than five decades of impact, New Community Corporation remains a cornerstone in Newark and surrounding cities, providing a holistic network of services that empower families, strengthen communities, and transform lives. From housing stability to workforce readiness, from childcare to mental health, NCC continues to carry out its founding mission—building a brighter future for generations to come.
