Description

Founded in 1985 through a grassroots response to the growing crisis of homelessness, the Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC) has been dedicated to ending homelessness and hunger in the community for nearly four decades. Guided by its mission to provide homeless and nearly homeless individuals and families with individualized supportive services and tailored housing solutions, SHC works to help people obtain and maintain safe, stable, and affordable housing.
What began as a local community effort has grown into a trusted and vital organization that now transforms lives by supporting more than 5,900 individuals every year. SHC provides a comprehensive network of programs, including emergency shelter, supportive housing, case management, food security services, and advocacy, all designed to address the unique needs of each client. By combining compassion with practical solutions, the organization empowers individuals and families to build long-term stability, self-sufficiency, and independence.
At the heart of SHC’s mission is the belief that everyone deserves a place to call home. Through strong partnerships, community collaboration, and dedicated staff, SHC not only meets immediate needs but also works to break the cycles of poverty and homelessness for future generations.
Whether through housing assistance, supportive services, or hunger relief programs, the Somerville Homeless Coalition continues to make a lasting impact on the community—offering dignity, hope, and opportunity to those who need it most.
