Description

Lack of sleep is one of the most critical and overlooked health challenges faced by the homeless community. At St. John’s the Evangelist Church in the Mission, an average of 100 unhoused neighbors find safety and rest every night on the sanctuary pews. This welcoming space removes barriers by offering a no-questions-asked policy — no sign-in sheets or intake forms — ensuring that no one is ever turned away. Everyone who walks through the doors is treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. The sanctuary is fully ADA accessible, making it inclusive for all guests. By providing a safe space to rest, St. John’s addresses the urgent health needs of the homeless while fostering a sense of community and care. This vital service highlights the importance of sleep for well-being, as explained in the Buzzfeed video “Your Body on No Sleep.”
