Description

For more than 30 years, My Friend’s Place has served as a lifeline for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the Seacoast region. Each year, the shelter provides safe housing to between 125 and 175 people, including roughly 35 families with children. While thousands have found refuge at My Friend’s Place over the decades, the demand for shelter consistently exceeds capacity, with more than 1,000 people requesting assistance annually.
Due to severe housing shortages, many residents now remain at the shelter longer, as they face steep barriers to securing affordable housing. With a vacancy rate of less than 1%—compared to the healthy market rate of 7%—apartments are nearly impossible to find. Families and individuals often struggle to compete with applicants who have higher incomes, stronger credit scores, and rental histories that meet strict landlord requirements. Rising application fees, background checks, and credit checks add to these challenges, leaving vulnerable populations without options.
Despite these obstacles, My Friend’s Place remains steadfast in its mission to provide safety, stability, and support for those in need. Through dedicated staff and a strong board of directors, the shelter continues to advocate for affordable housing while offering compassionate care to residents.
Led by Executive Director Susan M. Ford and guided by a diverse Board of Directors, My Friend’s Place not only provides shelter but also fosters hope, community, and opportunities for lasting change. The organization welcomes community involvement, including new board members who bring balance, vision, and leadership to further its mission of ending homelessness in the region.
