National Homelessness Law Center
Description
Law Center – Advancing Justice to Prevent and End Homelessness Nationwide
The Law Center is a nationally recognized legal advocacy organization committed to ending homelessness and advancing the civil and human rights of unhoused individuals across the United States. In 2022 and early 2023, the Law Center initiated a transformative strategic planning process to align its mission, values, and goals with the evolving needs of the communities it serves. This effort included collaboration with national, state, and local partners, individuals with lived experience of homelessness, and the organization’s full board and staff—ensuring a truly inclusive and responsive approach to the next phase of impact.
With this new three-year strategic plan, the Law Center is boldly committed to fearlessly advancing federal, state, and local policies that aim to prevent and ultimately end homelessness. At the same time, the organization remains unwavering in its mission to fiercely defend the civil liberties and human rights of all people experiencing homelessness, particularly those disproportionately affected by racial, economic, and social inequities.
A Strategic Approach to Homelessness Advocacy
The Law Center’s work focuses on using the power of the law to drive systemic change. With expertise in litigation, policy reform, education, and coalition building, the organization develops and implements comprehensive strategies that address the root causes of homelessness. These include lack of affordable housing, discrimination, inadequate access to healthcare, and the criminalization of poverty.
Through this strategic plan, the Law Center seeks to:
Influence housing policy at all levels of government to ensure access to safe, stable, and affordable housing.
Protect unhoused individuals from criminalization and discriminatory practices.
Collaborate with communities, service providers, and policymakers to implement effective solutions based on lived experience and evidence-based practices.
Advocate for economic justice, healthcare access, and systemic equity across all sectors affecting homelessness.
Championing the Rights of the Unhoused
At the heart of the Law Center’s mission is the belief that housing is a human right. Every individual deserves the dignity of a home and the protection of their civil rights, regardless of their circumstances. The organization works tirelessly to uphold those rights through legal action, public education, and legislative advocacy.
The Law Center’s commitment to equity, justice, and human dignity drives its work to eliminate barriers that prevent people from accessing housing, healthcare, employment, and legal protections. By uplifting the voices of those with lived expertise and centering their experiences in policy development, the Law Center ensures its advocacy is both effective and grounded in real-world challenges.
