Description

Founded in 2000 by Jim Theofelis, The Mockingbird Society is a leading advocacy organization dedicated to empowering youth across Washington state to actively participate in social justice initiatives aimed at improving the foster care system. The Society’s pioneering project, The Mockingbird Times, is a monthly newspaper written by youth with foster care experience, designed to positively influence public perceptions and raise awareness about the challenges faced by foster youth and those experiencing homelessness.

Over the years, The Mockingbird Society has expanded its efforts to collaborate with foster families and child-placing agencies to enhance outcomes for both young people and caregivers. Recognizing the strong correlation between foster care experience and youth homelessness, the organization began addressing homelessness issues in 2013, continuing its commitment to advocacy, support, and systemic change for vulnerable youth populations.
