Welcome House of Northern Kentucky is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving individuals and families facing homelessness and poverty in the Northern Kentucky region. Founded in 1982 by Father William Mertes, then Director of Catholic Social Services, and an ecumenical coalition of churches, Welcome House began as an Emergency Assistance Center designed to provide immediate relief to economically disadvantaged citizens in downtown Covington, KY.
Recognizing the growing need for shelter during the early 1980s—particularly among single-parent families, often led by women—Welcome House expanded its mission. In 1983, in partnership with the Benedictine Sisters, the organization renovated its facility at 141 Pike Street to open the Welcome House Shelter, a safe and supportive living space for women and children experiencing homelessness.
Over the years, Welcome House has continued to grow in response to the evolving needs of the community. Today, the organization offers a comprehensive range of services across three core program areas—all located at four facilities throughout downtown Covington. These services include housing solutions, support services, and homeless outreach, aimed at providing long-term stability and empowerment to individuals and families in crisis.
