Children of Shelters is a San Francisco nonprofit founded in 1995 to provide enrichment, education, and support for children living in or supported by family transitional shelters. Its work helps young people experiencing homelessness build confidence, pursue learning, and envision a brighter future.
Through partnerships with community schools and other organizations, Children of Shelters supports children across their academic journeys. Programs include early-childhood behavioral and inclusion support, speech and language therapy, tutoring, college application assistance, financial-aid management, and post-matriculation guidance. The organization also connects learning with health, creativity, and belonging through Garden to Table nutrition education, cooking and gardening workshops, summer camp support, birthday celebrations, art and music activities, and the SantaFest holiday dinner. Families seeking broader assistance can explore NHREA’s California homeless-assistance resources and federal assistance resources.
