Description

Tedford Housing, founded in 1987 by the Brunswick Area Interfaith Council (BAIC), began with a mission to provide emergency shelter for homeless adults in the Brunswick region. Named in honor of the donor who provided the first shelter building at 10 Pleasant Street, Tedford has since grown into a comprehensive community resource for individuals and families facing homelessness.
Over the decades, Tedford has expanded its services to meet evolving community needs. In 1998, a family shelter was added, followed by homelessness prevention programs in the early 2000s. By 2008, Tedford launched the Merrymeeting Project to support homeless students in Brunswick, Bath, and Topsham schools, serving youth until 2019. The organization has also developed 37 units of permanent supportive housing for families and individuals working toward long-term stability.
At the heart of Tedford’s work is personalized case management, ensuring every client is connected with the health, human, and community services they need to overcome barriers and achieve independence. Today, Tedford serves more people through outreach and resource coordination than within its facilities, highlighting its role as a trusted partner in addressing housing insecurity.
With a new, expanded shelter facility on the horizon, Tedford Housing is poised to bring its services under one roof—making it easier for neighbors in crisis to access comprehensive support. More than just a shelter, Tedford Housing is a lifeline of stability, compassion, and hope for individuals and families throughout the Midcoast Maine region.
